NUI Galway Clinical Research / Translational Research

The Clinical Research / Translational Research Facility is a four-storey building with a roof level penthouse plant enclosure with a gross floor area of approximately 5,300m2.

The building has been designed as a hi-technology clinical and translational research facility. Located within the grounds of the University College Hospital, Galway; the site is approximately 0.67 hectares in area and is located towards the southern boundary of the hospital campus, east of existing Clinical Science Institute Building, west of the existing maternity ward and south of the hospital ward block 2A. The site is presently used as a car park and also contains a small refuse area and gas bottle compound for the existing CSI building. While the building can be viewed as a stand alone building it will be directly linked to the CSI and the adjacent hospital ward block 2A through a number of levels. In response to the brief and other key factors the design proposes a predominantly horizontal or linear layout with accommodation spread over 4 floors.

The Translational Research Facility is accommodated on the second and third floor. The internal planning provides for open and flexible lab spaces with dispersed core lab functions and highly flexible lab casework systems that promote interaction and accommodate a variety of current and future modes of research.
